Clinical Trials For Ulcerative Colitis

You're Not Alone

In the United States, it is currently estimated that about 1 – 1.3 million people suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) being the most prevalent - Including Monroe, Louisiana.

Ulcerative colitis is the most common form of inflammatory bowel disease worldwide. The incidence and prevalence of IBD are increasing with time, indicating its emergence as a global disease.

Delta Research Partners (DRP), located in Monroe, Louisiana, is an independent research center dedicated to conducting high-quality clinical research trials in inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's disease).

Delta Research Partners

DRP is a worldwide leader in innovative clinical trials for inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis / Crohn's disease).

Dr. Raj Bhandari is the principal clinical investigator for DRP. He is a highly trained gastroenterologist, specializing in the diagnosis & treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's disease). He is committed to conducting High-Quality clinical trials using the highest standards of ethics.

Step Out

DRP are highly experienced and are leaders in conducting clinical trials on in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Although DRP conducts numerous clinical trials in digestive diseases, they specialize in IBD.

If you have Ulcerative Colitis, simply stepping through the door can be a challenge, because you never know when the symptoms will strike. STEP OUT to explore these clinical trials, which are enrolling over 1,000 people at medical centers all over the world, including here at Delta Research Partners, in Monroe, Louisiana.

Ulcerative Colitis

What is ulcerative colitis?Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that, due to an abnormal response by the body's immune system, causes swelling and ulcers in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The ulcers bleed and produce pus and mucus.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, a recurrent urge to have a bowel movement, lack of appetite, fever and fatigue.

Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody bowel movements are the most common symptoms of the disease.

Many proteins are released during an inflammatory response, in Ulcerated Colitis. These proteins can break down the protective layer of the intestines allowing bacteria, that usually safely live in the gut, to invade underlying tissue. The body responds to these bacteria with inflammation. This inflammation is what causes many of the symptoms associated with Ulcerative Colitis.

Clinical Trial Medications

The investigational medications used in clinical trials work differently than currently available treatments for Ulcerative Colitis. Many of these investigational medications are anti-bodies that block the action of these damaging proteins, thereby preventing inflammation and local tissue injury, allowing the body to rebuild the tissue that has been destroyed. By rebuilding the tissue, it is hoped that the bacteria can be contained within the inside of the intestine, thereby stopping the cycle of inflammation.

People with Ulcerative Colitis may be eligible to enroll in the studies if they:

  • Are 18 to 75 years old
  • Have had Ulcerative Colitis for at least six months
  • Have tried at least one of a variety of treatments that did not control their symptoms

Why Do People Participate?

Every year, several million people participate in clinical trials to support new drug applications (NDAs) that are submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although that may sound like a lot, it represents less than 10% of the more than 60 million people who have severe, life threatening and chronic illneses in the United States.

The reasons why patients participate in clinical trials have not changed much, over the past several years. Surveys indicate that the largest percentage (60%) of study subjects get involved to find a more effective treatment for their condition.

What Are The Benefits?

  • Gain access to advanced treatments that are otherwise unavailable
  • Access to study medication, medical care, and laboratory services at no cost to you (100% free).
  • No insurance required.
  • Physician fees, bloodwork, ancilary procedures such as colonoscopies, EKG's, etc are 100% free.
  • Most studies offer compensation for your time and travel
  • Between 750,000 and 900,000 study volunteers will complete clinical trials for NDAs every year

Are They Safe?

The ethical and legal codes that govern medical practice also, apply to clinical trials.

Most clinical research is federally regulated, with built in safeguards to protect the participants.

Clinical trials follows a carefully controlled protocol (study plan), to ensure that all procedures are followed - correctly and safely.
