Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that, due to an abnormal response by the body's immune system, causes swelling and ulcers in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The ulcers bleed and produce pus and mucus.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis include abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, a recurrent urge to have a bowel movement, lack of appetite, fever and fatigue.

Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody bowel movements are the most common symptoms of the disease.

Many proteins are released during an inflammatory response, in Ulcerated Colitis. These proteins can break down the protective layer of the intestines allowing bacteria, that usually safely live in the gut, to invade underlying tissue. The body responds to these bacteria with inflammation. This inflammation is what causes many of the symptoms associated with Ulcerative Colitis.

Clinical Trial Medications

The investigational medications used in clinical trials work differently than currently available treatments for Ulcerative Colitis. Many of these investigational medications are anti-bodies that block the action of these damaging proteins, thereby preventing inflammation and local tissue injury, allowing the body to rebuild the tissue that has been destroyed. By rebuilding the tissue, it is hoped that the bacteria can be contained within the inside of the intestine, thereby stopping the cycle of inflammation.

People with Ulcerative Colitis may be eligible to enroll in the studies if they:

Are 18 to 75 years old
Have had Ulcerative Colitis for at least six months
Have tried at least one of a variety of treatments that did not control their symptoms
